O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She was able to make it into the top hundred round following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil was praised by the judges. But she lost badly in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the third place again. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
