O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois she graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in the year 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. She was a part of a couple of commercials on television, but then moved from Illinois to Los Angeles. The career path O'Grady started her career as a models for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She debuted on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as a recurring role in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred in a variety of other shows and appeared in made for films and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first major role on ABC's police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde team secretary performed from 1993 to 1996. For each of those years she won the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Drama Series.
